Yobe is a fairly new state. Created in 1991, Yobe is known by the motto the young shall grow. Under its Governor, Ibrahim Geidam, a number of prestige projects have been completed – a new School of Nursing, a State University and a new three star hotel. However, the state has suffered from high levels of insecurity, leading to loss of life and property and an economic slowdown. Although the state has relatively credible plans and budgets for development, progress towards the Millennium Development Goals has been slow.
During 2011, SPARC supported the government to undertake a range of self assessments which identified specific bottlenecks to better governance, and the programme is now engaging to strengthen the way resources are used for development.
